Squid Ink Art is definitely a partnership between two very different people – Myself, Noelene and my husband Michael.
I always loved art as a hobby while I was growing up, however it was something I never took too seriously. I concentrated on a career in shipping and transport – about as far away from art as you can get! After I turned 30, I discovered a botanical illustration class which I decided to take on a whim. I loved it, but I really wanted to explore all the different techniques and styles there is to try, so decided to take more diverse art classes. Through these new classes I met my art teacher, Patricia (Art Tribe) and it was she who really put me on the path to discovery. She encouraged me to try it all – pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolour, acrylic, ink - even when she probably should have told me to be slightly less ambitious… but I’m eternally grateful to her for building up my skills and confidence to the point for me to even consider an endeavour like this.
It was when I was expecting our baby that Michael, the business-minded half of this duo, started to convince me that now was the time. If we were ever going to make something out of my art, there was no better time than being on maternity leave to give it a go. Without Michael I wouldn't have imagined building a business like this. He has done all the behind the scenes work and research, and created the website you're looking at now – I’ve just been lucky enough to have the freedom to create the images.
Ultimately our idea was to create pictures that tell a story, that make you want to know what’s going to happen next. Pictures that make you use your imagination and take you on a journey. Colourful, whimsical, beautiful, completely handmade pictures – for the young, and the young at heart.
We really hope you like what we've created.
