Time and Tales of the Sea

Time and Tales of the Sea

from 15.00

This piece was originally created for entry into an art competition, the theme being the relationship between humanity and the sea. I chose to depict man’s love of folklore and classic imagery and tales of the sea -  being romantic tall ships, treasure islands, huge giants of the deep, alluring mermaids, a guiding lighthouse and the old fisherman, just to name a few.

The idea of the hourglass was a way to depict both night and day into the one image while the sand in the hourglass became the night sky and the mountains in the different bulbs. This was an incredibly slow careful and time consuming piece to create. The “sand” was with a technique called stippling - essentially using individual small dots to create the shade and density of the night sky and the mountains.
